## Structural versus architectural

Structural panels are used on low-pitch applications and are usually installed directly over purlins — effectively becoming both the deck and the roof. Vertical seam-type panels are the most common structural metal roofing and are almost always used on non-residential projects.Architectural panels are installed over a wood or metal deck, or in some applications directly over an existing roof. They're generally used only on steeper pitches — 3:12 in most cases — to ensure proper water run-off.

## Why buildings choose metal

- Metal allows snow to slide off rather than back up against the eave — the process known as ice damming.- Superior solar reflectivity reduces air conditioning usage, and therefore energy consumption, in warm climates and smoggy cities.- It's used across church steeples, restaurant chains, condominiums, retail outlets, sports venues, pre-engineered metal structures, apartments, schools, marinas, resorts and office buildings.

## Profiles we install

### Standing seam
Structural panels for both residential and non-residential applications, manufactured in a factory or roll-formed on site. Generally cut to length with raised seams and concealed fasteners, especially on low-pitch installations. Price varies greatly with the metal and thickness used.
### Flat seam
Used on flat, low-slope, very steep, or unusually shaped roofs.
### Metal shingles and shakes
Aluminum, steel, copper or zinc. Superior durability, longevity, wind and fire resistance and energy efficiency, in a wide variety of styles, colors and profiles.

## Frequently asked questions

**How long does a commercial metal roof last?**

Service life depends on the metal, the coating system and the detailing at penetrations and terminations. Panels routinely outlast the fasteners and sealants around them, which is why maintenance of the details matters more than the panel itself.

**Can metal panels be roll-formed on site?**

Yes. Standing seam panels can be manufactured in a factory or roll-formed on site and cut to length, which eliminates end laps on long runs.

**Why do concealed fasteners matter?**

Every exposed fastener is a penetration through the panel and a gasket that ages. Concealed-fastener standing seam moves the attachment out of the water plane.
